CRSI / CPF / Caltrans Workshop on High-Strength Reinforcing Steel (17 September 2026, Oakland CA)

On Thursday, 17 September 2026 the Charles Pankow Foundation (CPF), the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), and Caltrans hosted a workshop in Oakland CA focused on the latest advancements in high-strength reinforcing steel (HSR) and its growing application in transportation and building infrastructure. The event brought together researchers, engineers, industry leaders, and public agency representatives to discuss evolving design practices, code developments, and implementation strategies for high-strength reinforcement.

Attendees explored research that has contributed to major updates in the 2019 and 2025 editions of ACI 318, including advances in the use of high-strength reinforcement and performance-based design approaches. Presentations highlighted ongoing efforts to improve structural resilience, efficiency, and constructability through the use of higher-strength reinforcing materials and innovative mechanical splicing technologies.

The workshop also showcased collaborative research efforts supported by the Charles Pankow Foundation and highlighted how research findings are being incorporated into industry publications and design guidance. Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts from transportation agencies, academia, testing organizations, and the concrete construction industry, fostering dialogue on future research needs and pathways to broader implementation.

Presentation materials and webinar recordings are available through a public resource site (HERE) to support continued learning and knowledge sharing across the industry.
