NEW RESEARCH REPORT: Introduction to Performance-Based Structural Fire Design (PBSFD) for Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) Officials
The Charles Pankow Foundation (CPF) in partnership with the American Institute of Steel Construction and Magnusson Klemencic Associates are pleased to announce the new research report, Introduction to Performance-Based Structural Fire Design (PBSFD) for Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) Officials, is available for free download. Prof. Amit Varma was the Principal Investigator and led the Purdue Research Team.
Abstract: This project developed educational and training materials to introduce authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) to the topic of performance-based structural fire design (PBSFD). These materials will assist AHJ to gain an understanding of the goals, objectives, fire scenarios, thermal and structural analyses for PBSFD. After completing the training, AHJ will be able to coordinate the review of PBSFD designs along with their assumptions, limitations, and caveats. They will be able to effectively manage relationships between the engineering team and the peer review panel and make final decisions. The educational materials are developed in five essential parts (EP), or modules based on standards, guides, and building codes. These EPs cover: (1) performance objectives, (2) fire scenarios and loading, (3) thermal analyses, (4) structural analyses, (5) peer review panel and discussion, and (5) design examples with peer review.
